Handheld Medical Device and Handpiece Design

Handheld Medical Device and Handpiece Design

A handheld device is judged in the first ten seconds a clinician picks it up. Balance, grip transition, cable exit, thumb reach, and where the weight sits relative to the wrist determine whether it gets adopted or tolerated.

Solea, MDEA Gold 2014

Solea, MDEA Gold 2014

We designed the handpiece and delivery arm for Solea, the first CO2 laser system cleared by the FDA for hard and soft tissue ablation. The complete system runs to over 650 components and more than 150 custom-designed parts, and went from concept to 510k in under two years. Solea won Gold at the 2014 Medical Design Excellence Awards.

A laser handpiece carries its own constraints. The delivery path runs through the body of the tool, the balance point shifts with the arm it hangs from, and the whole thing has to stay comfortable through a procedure measured in tens of minutes.

What we actually do

What we actually do

Ergonomic study against real hand anthropometry, not a generic percentile chart. CMF selection that survives repeat sterilisation. Mechanism and trigger design. Grip mock-ups in the first weeks, evaluated in hand, so the ergonomic decision is made on physical evidence rather than on a rendering.

Rapid product development expertise in Class I, II and III medical devices. Front end concept development, ergonomic study, mechanical features, prototyping and design validation, full scale manufacturing.
